Food waste on trial

food organics

Mount Barker Council identified businesses along Gawler Street and surrounding areas as part of a Council-funded 6-month trial to investigate the feasibility of expanding the kerbside green organics service to food based businesses.

It is an outcome of Council’s Waste to Resources Management Plan to encourage and provide sustainable waste management in the region and capture unrecovered waste resources instead of sending to landfill.

Participating businesses received an additional 140L green waste bin, collected weekly by Solo Resource Recovery, with contents taken to Peats Soil in Langhorne Creek to be processed into nutrient-rich compost. The trial will run until the end of April 2022.

Once completed, we will assess its success and determine if there is an opportunity to move to a 3-bin service for food businesses across the entire district. Most businesses are already committed to waste recovery and acknowledge food waste can take up a large amount of bin space, as commercial general waste bins have been found to consist of approximately 60% green waste.

Composting is a vital step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it helps divert organic waste away from landfill and in your garden provides better soil quality and water retention.
